I’ve lived long enough to know this: fashion rules change, trends come and go — but style is personal, and it doesn’t have an expiration date.
At 68, I’m not dressing to look younger. I’m dressing to feel confident, comfortable, and like myself....on a really great day!
This isn’t about chasing what’s “in.” It’s about the pieces I reach for again and again because they work — at any age, and in real life.
What I Look for Now (And Why It Works)
These days, I choose clothing that:
-
Feels good on my body
-
Moves with me instead of fighting me (or worse, clinging to me!)
-
Looks polished without effort
Fewer pieces. Better choices.
The Pieces I Always Come Back To
1. The Power of a Good Topper
When in doubt, add a topper.
A cardigan, jacket, or wrap can take a simple outfit from “fine” to finished — and it does it above the waist, where it actually matters on camera and in real life.
2. Accessories That Carry the Outfit
I don’t pile them on — I choose one thing that makes sense.
A classic necklace, a pair of great earrings, or a purse that goes with everything can elevate the simplest outfit without trying too hard.
3. Bottoms that work WITH you, not against you
These days, comfort absolutely rules - especially when it comes to pants and jeans! I have listed a few of my personal favorite brands or styles that I personally wear and/or recommend.
Jeans - I typically have two rules -- high-waisted and flared (or wide) legs. Some people refer to high-waiseted pants as "Mom pants", but they'll get it when they reach a certain age. I need all the help that I can get to hold everything in place (as comfortably as possible). I also demand wide legs. As I've mentioned previously in my blogs, I have lymphedema in my legs and suffer from very swollen lower legs and feet. I absolutely do not consider pants with straight legs hugging the swollen areas. Judy Blue is a brand I've come to trust quite a bit ever since being introduced to them a few years ago. They look great, while giving the utmost in stretch and comfort.
Pants - Pretty much the identical rules go for the pants that I wear these days. For a great all-season choice, I choose a wide leg (Palazzo) trouser. This one comes in multiple colors and is a staple in my closet.
My Rulesfor Fashion (It’s Simple)
I don’t dress for my age...I dress for my life.
